TLC’s Anxiety-booster
During my bouts of much-needed clutter-busting, I often turn to TLC’s reality shocker, “Hoarders: Buried Alive When I initially heard about the show, I wondered how they would dig up enough subjects to fill a seasonal broadcast. Not a problem! Apparently compulsive hoarding is an epidemic. If my own extended family is any indication, that shouldn’t surprise me. I can name at least five hoarders on my mom’s side alone. I’ve also known neighbors, friends and unfortunately roommates who hoard. So why didn’t I think of producing this show?
This is not feel-good TV. It’s formulaic but rarely ends on an upbeat note. The most recent episode I saw on the Directtv schedule featured Jim and Judi, two southern residents whose homes were so cluttered, there were no visible floors, only piles of garbage. Judi sleeps on a corner of her bed because it’s otherwise covered with take-out containers she hasn’t thrown out in a year. The stuff she has compulsively bought and kept for seven years is piled head-high throughout her three bedroom house. She is concerned about it being condemned, should her neighbors discover its condition.
Jim lives in a small one-bedroom apartment along with mounds of useless stuff. He also suffers from depression, obsessive-compulsive disorder, and social anxiety so pronounced, he hasn’t held a job in ten years. His plain-spoken father supports him and admits there’s nothing else he can do to help his troubled son.
“Hoarders” introduces us to its subjects, then invites family into their homes for shocking reveals (done tastefully in medium or long-shots—rarely in close-up). Then the psychologists and clean-up crews arrive, offering assistance. The process is painful to endure. The professional organizers are the most infinitely patient people ever to appear on television. Any rushing the process could cause a relapse of hoarding. It’s heavy television viewing.
In the end, Jim is able to clear out his kitchen and invite his father to dinner. Judi has done the same, but sadly, she keeps her garbage in a storage bin. If “Hoarders” doesn’t motivate you to clean out the garage, I don’t know what will.
